Effective "Distributed Scrum" Practices

When it comes to Distributed Scrum, the Agile Teams can be located in more than one location.

Some of the Agile Teams are also planned in 3 locations based on the nature of the Business.
Majority of the Teams are Designed as:Onsite & Offshore teams, there are also other Business Models where in we have a Combination of: Onsite, Offsite, & and also a Near Shore.
Below are few of the best Practises which will help when dealing with Distributed Scrum Teams.

1. Active colloboration Between Distributed Teams:
a. Daily stand up Meeting.
The time can be decided by your teams as per your project schedules.
If you are Having a offshore Team in India and a Onsite team in US or Europe , fix the Right Timing.
During the stand up meeting an Online Compuer Screen needs to be shared between two teams, where the Time Reduced or the Impediments are noted down.
Or if u have a SIMPLE WALL - Maintain the Post-Its Movements with a LIVE WEB CAM.
b. Pairing of Onsite and Offshore Team members:
Pairing is one of the best effetive ways to complete a User Story.
To get started, the SAME user story can be shared by 2 team members - 1 in onsite and other in Offshore.
Also Pair Programming Between the Onsite and Offshore can be done by a Shared Desk Top.

c. Team Members Available in Comminicators or Other Messengers:
All the Agile Team members need to be in the common Messenger- Ex: MS Communicator, Skype , or others.
Creation of Project Chat Groups.MS Communicator , Skype haave the facility of creating project groups and the members dicussions on those chat groups.

d. Online Tools: for Story Tracking: virtual story-task board.

The onsite and Offshore Team members to have a virtual task board if possible.

A Simple WALL in Onsite with Great Colloborations will do for most of the projects, but the wall will be more visible only to the OnSite teams.
WIKI: for User story descriptions, Arch Diagrams uploading , functional specs , team info , contant numbers, project related info getting added will help a lot.
f. Time Difference & Over Lapping between Agile Teams:

Select the BEST Timings for Overlap between the distributed teams.
2. Distributed Sprint Planning:
a. When it comes to Sprint Planning involve both the teams to-gether.
b. Do not get only the estimations from only one team, get from both the teams.-- THIS WILL HELP IN THE OWNERSHIP OF THE TASKS TAKEN UP.
3. Continuous Builds, Continuos Test Automation , Big Visible Cruises : or Big Visible Information Emittors on Either sides:
a. if you are planning for a CI System in place , there needs to be a Information Emittors in OnSite as well as on the Offshore.Ex: Cruise Control, TFS, Hudson, Team City. etc.,
b. Also the Test's Passed \ Failed info should be configured on the CI topology.
c. Sprint Burn downs and product burndown based on User Stories to be available on a SEPARATE MONITOR for both the teams.
4. During Demo:
a. During Sprint Demo's if both the teams are present they all can Hear the VOICE OF THE CUSTOMER!
5.Web Cams: Having Web Cams in both the ends will be a great tool for colloboration.

Silverlight :Expander within AccordianItem with a theme Applied: sys.InvalidOperationException : AG_E_UNKOWN_ERROR

my team was working in a XAML where we need to add themes to a accordian items when there was Expander controls within the accordian..

whenever we applied themes to this partucular xaml we came across an err like :

sys.InvalidOperationException : AG_E_UNKOWN_ERR

Initially i thoughought this was a Silverlight 2.0 errr....but then started to see why this err occurs and jumped in to my task getting to the core of the xaml, removing controls one by one untill the issue was kicked off...

1. removed most of the controls in the xaml, and holded only the err prone controls.
2. removed the themes first - it worked.
3. added themes - err reproduced.

then thought of havinng the round abouts of making the controls invisible in the XAML And then make them visible during the run time in the C# code.

I drilled down and saw that Expanders inside the accordian got the errs when themes were applied.

i made the expander Visibility="Collapsed" and then in code behind made the visibility of the expanders

Now the err was not appearing ....this is one way of approach to remove errrs when we apply themes for expanders inside the accoridians in Silverlight

ms build missing reference

After my previous post of adding the explict declaration of the project dependencies ,there was one instance where the same problem was existing.

So this tiime i manually removed the reference of the dll, and then added again...it workd in all instances after this step.

So 2 ways here:
1. Either manually removing the dll ref's and adding again.
2. giveing the explicit declaration in the sln file as like the previous post will help!

msbuild missing reference ,msbuild wrong build order

MSbuild incorrect Build order ?

MSbuild reference missing Dll's ?

when we come across these kind of situations , the probable reason could be that the build order in VS2008 is different from the build oder which msbuild uses.

VS uses a build order and passes the same to msbuild. BUt when u directly call msbuild to build, there could be difference in the build order of the projects.

To over come the missing references in Msbuild and Build order add the below section to the *.sln file.
ProjectSection(ProjectDependencies) = postProject section

ex:

if there is Project B which is referecning Project A , and if Project B gets built without A then add the below :

devenv.exe/installvstemplates - Missing the templates?

Today i came across a rare situation where i was installing/ uninstalling few visual studio pluggins, i was not able to see any of the Visual studio project templates.

When you are trying to create a new project and When u do not see the VS2008 templates getting loaded ,just perform the below actions:

1. Event log: check in the events log under the Application section if u see any errors.Check if there are erros and says to run devenv.exe/installvstemplates.

2. Now do not run the devenv.exe/installvstemplates.

3. Delete the itemcache folders under :Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE

4. now open the vs command prompt and run devenv.exe/installvstemplates.

5. at this point the different project templates should be appearing.

Silverlight Client Framework- PRISM2

WCF - Error in Accessing a IIS hosted svc

WCF hosting -- First err...

I started with my WCF Project and the first err got was that when *.svc was asccessed in webpage the err was like:
"A Name was Started with Invalid character..<'%' "..

Tips to trouble shoot this err:

1. Check if u Have .svc extensions in IIS.check if this points to the aspnet_isapi.dll.

if not brwose for the location of aspnet_isapi.dll.

2. Still if u get the errr check if u have already ran servicemodelreg.exe which can be found under c:\
\microsoft .Net\framework\version\v3.0\wcf\. run this exe in the command prompt with the -i option.

3. restart the IIS once.

4. browse your WCF -- *.SVC location now , ur svc will now be available.

Errors During VS2005 Installations & Uninstallations

Recently came across this task of Uninstalling and Installing VS2005. few of the errs took somne time for me to investigate.
All the errs are documented here which will save time for someone who reads this..

Errors occuring with VS2005 Uninstallations and Installations:

Recently i went through lots errors with VS2005 uninstall and trying to install again.

Brief:
The need for me to uninstall Vs205 was to move the install location from C drive to D Drive. to get more additional space in C Drive..:)
The uninstall was very smooth.
After that when i was in the install process i got the below scenarios:

1. VS2005 install package gets the list of items to be installed.

2. Completes Dotnet 2.0 install and when VS2005 part is in middle , start to get an error.

3. But even with an error in the vs2005 install part , the install pgm continues for the next item to get installed.

4. once i get a Installation Completed Successfully message , i tried to Open VS2005 IDE , it vanishes.

5. So i uninstalled once again , install again with an err and tried to open My ide, but this time it was asking for the Default

So my uninstall and install of VS2005 went for 10 times or so.
Digged more in to this problem.
when looking in to the Event Viewers the msgs were like:
1. .NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.42 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (7C81EB33) (800703e9)

So Googled more in this problem also after a uninstall of VS2005 i manually deleted all the files of VS2005 in my C drive and also in my D drive.
here is a Point : VS2005 stores its IDE settings in a *.VSSettings file. This will be located in

C:\Documents and Settings\$Your Logged in Prfoile Name $\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Settings

I also removed this file also in my machine.

This is the file which is used by VS2005 IDE to open up with the existing settings.
I also ran this command in my machine: devenv\reset cmd.
So after all my manual deletions of VS2005 related i installed once again. This time it asked for the default language to be selected.
and now there was a New direction to my Problem.

Previously in my machine i had all the workflow foundations loaded, and the previous VS2005 was loading with this. also i had Ajax in my machine.
So my current IDE was trying to load Workflow foundations, and Ajax.
The below errs occured:

Package Load Failure
Package 'Microsoft.workflow.VsDesigner.DesignPackage,Microsoft.workflow.VsDesigner,Versopm = 3.0.0.0,Culture=neutral,....Had failed to load Properly.

Please contact Package vendor for assistance.application restart is recommended , due to

My Apartment Search Ended!!!

Finally my house sarch is done and we moved to our nee apartment in Bangalore!!

Yes getting a flat in Bangalore was a dream for me for the past few years and recently in April 10th we had the House warming ceremony and moved in.

Located in Green Glen Layout , its a Spacious 2 BHK where my son runs and plays a lot. Its also bagged with a Joggers Track in the back -where the residents of this Layout use for walking and where kids play.

IIS7 Settings for WCF hosting

IIS7.0 is much advanced than its previous verions. 40 feature modules and more advantages.

However i have captured the basic config steps which are a must for hosting WCF Servives in IIS7.0.

1.Make sure the below settings are done in IIS7.0 to host a service:
a. Open the Windows Programs features
b. Click , expand the nodes to Internet Information Services:
c. Click on the Web Management tools
d. Expand all the sub – nodes

Select the IIS6 Management Compatibility
select on all the sub items.

2.Now click on the world wide web services.

3.Expand the Security node:

5.Click on the Basic, Windows, Client Certificate Mapping, IIS Client Certificate, etc ..Except IP Security.
6.When Microsoft 3.0 is installed in the Vista machine, we will see a node like Microsoft Dotnet Framework 3.0.
7.Click on the “Microsoft .Net 3.0 Node” and expand.

8. Check on the Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation.
9. The above settings are pretty much enough for the settings for IIS7.0 to host a WCF Service.
10. To check if all the settings are done perfect open IIS7.0 now.
11. The below steps will help us to check if the settings from step 2 to step7 are reflected in IIS7.0.
12. Open IIS7.0 and click on the Application Pools in the left most corner.

13. In the application Pools check if there are 2 Pools in default, namely the Clasic.Net AppPool and the Default AppPool.
14. In IIS7.0 select a particular Virtual directory and check for the Properties.
15. Select the Handler Mappings:

16. Click on the Handler Mappings:
17. Check on the List of Handler Mappings , there will be a mapping for *.svc:

18. Check if the svc-ISAPI-2.0 is present.
19. The values of the SVC setting will be like:
a. Request Path = *.svc
b. Executable: %SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll
c. Request RestrictionsàVerbsàAll Verbs.
20. Click on the Directory Settings:

21. When you do a IIS restart, have the restart done from the command prompt.

Hope the above steps will reduce 1 hr of Time to someone!!!!!!

XAML --1

XAML is the next next generation of the windows presentation for applications.

Think if XAML as a programing language where in the front end - GUI is all governed by XML tags...for each control which is added on the screen , there is an entry in the XAML file, in the XML node entry..

XAML is used as the front end GUI part and the Event Driven part of the XAML is coded in the back *.xaml.cs file..for example, if you want to create a message box which needs to be pop up on a click of a button of button. The Messagebox pop up code is written in the *.xaml.cs file.

1.Add the button to the XAML screen and you can see an entry like :

2. Now on the click button , we i have written the OnClick event.

3. The code which must be written for this click event must be written on the OnClick function in the XAML.Cs file.

4.Just the above is not enogh , there needs to be a routedevent which needs to be created :

This is a new namespace introduced from CLR 2.0.

How can you use this ? This namespace can be used when your client and the Remotable components are present in the same machine.

IPC stands for interprocess communications in the same windows OS.

.Net 1.1 had only TCP channel--which means the remotable components were using TCP channel for remoting , but from .Net 2.0 we have the option of deciding between IPC or TCP..

So according to your remoting requirements and if you use .Net 2.0 you can use IPC communications.

Partial Classes, what are they ? are they New ?

Yes CLR2.0 provides the new concept of Partial class---- A single class can be split in to many classes in same name , but with the indicator partial.

Partial classes are a new feature to the .NET Framework 2.0 and again C# takes advantage of this addition.
Partial classes allow you to divide up a single class into multiple class files, which are later combined into a single class when compiled.
To create a partial class, you simply need to use the partial keyword for any classes that are to be joined together with a different class.
The partial keyword precedes the class keyword for the classes that are to be combined with the original class.

For instance, you might have a simple class called Calculator as shown here:

public class Calculator{

public int Add(int a, int b) {
return a + b;
}
}
From here, you can create a second class that attaches itself to this first class as shown here in the following example:

public partial class Calculator{

public int Subtract(int a, int b) {

return a - b;

}
}
When compiled, these classes will be brought together into a single Calculator class instance as if they were built together to begin with.

Windows Service in VS2005 ??

Had you ever stuck up in creating windows Service in vs2005 ??
Like any other Person , you must have also wondered why the template for creating Windows Service is absent in VS2005.
I was also the one.
But after some research i found that , VS2005 is not provided with the Template for creating windows service in VS2005.
In order to create a Windows Service in VS2005 , follow the Below steps:
1. Create an empty project.
2. Save the project.
3. Add system.ServiceProess and System.Configuration.Install Dll references.
4.Now you need to add 2 class files to ur project.
5.windowsServcie.cs and windowsServiceInstaller.cs
6.Add the below code using statement to windowsService.cs:
using System.Diagnostics;using System.ServiceProcess;
namespace WindowsService{ class WindowsService : ServiceBase { }
7. add the below using statements code to windowsserviceinstaller.cs:
using System;
using System.ComponentModel;using System.Configuration.Install;using System.ServiceProcess;
namespace WindowsService{ [RunInstaller(true)] public class WindowsServiceInstaller : Installer { ///

/// Public Constructor for WindowsServiceInstaller. /// - Put all of your Initialization code here. ///

public WindowsServiceInstaller() { } }

8. Now add all the code as like VS2003 , which u like to add for the windows service.

Tips and Steps for .Net Migration From 1.1 to 2.0 CLR

Hi ,
When you plan to migrate your existing Dotnet Project from 1.1 CLR to 2.0 CLR have the below check list:

1.Ensure that you have VS2005 in all the machines you are using for migration.

2. Do not only download CLR2.0 for migration install VS2005.

3.Use NAnt Rc4 from SourceForge.net to get a compile list of warnings which you get when you compile your existing code built in 1.1 CLR.

4.Have NAnt RC4 version installed in your machine.

5.Get a complete list of Warnings , errors when you build your existing code with NAnt RC4 with CLR 2.0

6.Open up each project in VS2005 and then go for the Migration steps .VS2005 will ask for conversion with a Wizard and go for conversion.

7. Open the project and have a build. CLR 2.0 will throw warnings if there Deprecated , Obsolete and Ambogous namings done. Resolve one by one.

8. Have the individual builds for each projects seperatelly in VS2005 IDE.

9. For web Projects apart from installing Vs2005 you will also need to download this Path from Microsoft.

10.Once each project is compiled in VS 2005 IDE. have the NAnt RC4 Build.
